Why I Design the Way I Do: A Series on Appliances, Dimensions and the Use of Space

TL;DR: Over the next few weeks I’m publishing a series on the reasoning behind tiny home design, one element at a time, starting with laundry tomorrow.

Every choice in a small home design has to earn its place twice over: once for what it does, and once for the space it costs. In a conventional house you can get away with a few decisions that do not quite make sense. In a tiny home, you cannot. So I thought it was worth showing my working.

Over the coming weeks I am going to take a series of posts to walk through why I design the way I do, element by element: laundry, fridges, hobs and ovens, bathrooms, the television, dining, washing up, beds. For each one I will dig into a little history, the way we actually use that space or appliance day to day, and the reasoning that leads me to choose certain dimensions, layouts or appliances over others.

Expect the odd surprising fact, a few measurements, and some honest opinion. (I am a Building Geek. I find this stuff genuinely fascinating, and it tends to show.)

Coming up in the series:

  • In The Wash: Laundry
  • Midnight Snacks: The Fridge
  • What’s Cooking: Hobs, Ovens and Microwaves
  • Scrub Up: Bathrooms and Toilets
  • That’s Entertainment: The TV
  • Table for Two: Dining and Eating
  • Dirty Dishes: Washing Up
  • And So, To Bed: Beds and Bedrooms

I may add more along the way. I may not. We will see.

First up, tomorrow: laundry, and why the obvious answer to “where does the washing machine go” is can be wrong.
